The project will see the creation of an exhibition and didactic area to offer locals and tourists insight into the rich and plurilingual literary history of the town, also by means of the use of modern technology.
The complex will house the already existing Svevo and Joyce museums, a Saba area, a gallery for the many writers and poets the city has known, and an area for temporary exhibitions. LETS is designed to be a permanent center for literary education. It will host exhibitions (LETS Show), theatre and music (LETS Play), oral programs (LETS Talk, LETS Read) aimed at the in-depth study the diverse features of writing and reading. The University of Trieste and other academies, cultural associations, research and study centers, archives and libraries in Trieste, Italy and foreign countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Germany, Switzerland) will be involved from the beginning of the project stage of this complex that aims to become a symbol of the compound identity of Trieste.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ overlay_alpha=”100″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ row_height_use_pixel=””][vc_column column_width_percent=”80″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ zoom_width=”0″ zoom_height=”0″ width=”1/1″][vc_separator sep_color=”accent”][vc_custom_heading text_height=”” text_color=”color-jevc”]LETS Digit[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text text_lead=”yes”]

LETS Digit is a humanities IT hub within Biblioteca Civica, the municipal library of Trieste, the City of Science. The project will continue to develop the potential of digital technologies to offer new ways of enjoying literature, from e-books to distance reading and multimedia exhibitions at the future LETS Museum, with special focus on the web-based pre-experience of the museum.
LETS Digit will develop pilot projects already started at the Svevo and Joyce museums in collaboration with the Master’s Degree in Digital Humanities at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice and the Department of Engineering and Architecture at  the University of Trieste.
An augmented reality app has already been launched to allow visitors to interact with the museum spaces and explore collections enriched with virtual content accessible individually using cell phones.

Artificial intelligence also finds a home at LETS Digit: The AItalo Svevo project – created by Biblioteca Hortis, Machine Learning Lab, Master in Data Science and Scientific Computing and the Department of Law, Language, Interpretation and Translation of the University of Trieste – is an experiment on the automatic generation of texts with the aim of producing a letter that imitates the style and contents of Svevo’s correspondence.

Given its cultural and book-publishing history, Trieste has a heritage of children’s literature and illustrated books. Its municipal libraries and school libraries house books that document the lives of children in Trieste and what they read starting from the early 1800s, in all the languages spoken in the area. Given this literary heritage, and seeing that Italy lacks a true national archive for children’s literature, the idea of an archive-museum of children’s literature was born. Synergy between publishing firms (Edizioni EL, Einaudi Ragazzi, Emme Edizioni, Editoriale Scienza e Bohem Press Italia), collectors and scholars guarantees the sources and know-how to create an archive of international standing. Along with Patto per la Lettura di Trieste (the Pact for Reading of Trieste), LETS Wonder proposes to organize an annual international exhibition of illustrated books to promote this heritage and boost collaboration networks between publishers, libraries, art galleries, literary cafés, associations and Italian and foreign archives.

The project was launched as part of the PISUS Sustainable Urban Development Plan, and Trieste Metro walks, organized as ring routes, will offer roughly a hundred information boards, some of which will be interactive (thanks to collaboration with the H2020 CIVITAS PORTIS project). A series of leaflets, a website and an app for mobile devices will also be available. Planned as if they were subway routes, the seven itineraries – Short, Architecture, Nature and Sports, Cultural and Religious Communities, Art and Science, History and Literature – will have several stops, some with “exits” to more in-depth exploration paths. For instance, the literature ring will bring visitors to the house where Italo Svevo was born. From this exit point, one will be able to take the Svevo Walk.
A second integrated app, designed by the Health Authority of Trieste, will monitor the cardiovascular health of the population by measuring the physical activity carried out during the walks.

Starting a publishing house is an integral part of the LETS cultural project. The publishing initiative will pursue specific objectives, namely to republish literary works that have been out-of-print for a long time, often with expired publishing rights, to carry out translations that can help the different cultural and language groups of the town understand each other better, to offer new authors a publisher that focuses on quality, creativity and projects, to prepare a host of materials – anthologies, essays, bibliographies – that are useful to better define and spread the image of Trieste Letteraria (Trieste as a City of Literature) and its connection with surrounding areas, both historically speaking and in today’s day and age.  Last but not least, LETS Print will pursue initiatives that are already underway and connected to children’s publishing – the Under 35 project of the Charta Sporca group, Biblioteca U35 started at Polo Giovani del Comune di Trieste (Youth Complex of the Municipality of Trieste) and summer residencies for young authors – all with a view to promoting publications and the acquisition of  professional skills in the sector.

As part of a project aimed at redeveloping the suburbs and overcoming educational poverty, in collaboration with local actors such as LARU, PAG and progetto Chromopolis–La città del futuro, LETS Grow intends to develop projects linked to literature in the suburbs. Using participative planning tools such as design thinking or  focus groups, the aim is to design places and services that users can call their own and which can serve as incubators for inclusion and social cohesion.
As the first step of the project, work is underway at the library in the suburban quarter of Melara. Project development and participatory management workshops will be held in order to give life to a scalable, capillary project.
