Marco Cavallo

25 February 1973: Marco Cavallo, a large puppet made of wood and blue papier-mâché, emerges from the walls of the Trieste asylum together with a procession of patients, doctors and nurses. He is the symbol of Franco Basaglia’s revolution that led to the promulgation of Law 180 on psychiatric reform and opened the park and pavilions of the former asylum to the city. The slogan ‘Freedom is therapeutic’ travelled the world and spread the Basaglia model to all latitudes.
