“A portrait of the artist as an old man”

Postcard from James Joyce to Italo Svevo, Galway, 26 July 1912. The picture postcard, sent from the village in the west of Ireland where Joyce’s companion, Nora, was born, depicts “the oldest fisherman in Claddagh, Galway”. Joyce addressed it to “Hector Schmitz, at the Veneziani factory | Chiarbola Superiore | Trieste | (Austria)” and wrote “A portrait of the artist as an old man”, parodying the title of his own novel.
