The musicality of the name of Almidano Artifoni, director of the Berlitz School, greatly impressed Joyce who bestows it first on Stephen Dedalus’ teacher of Italian in Stephen Hero (Father Artifoni)and then on his singing teacher in Ulysses (Almidano Artifoni).
The Berlitz teaching method often makes use of text comprehension questions as can also be seen in the English section of the “Poliglotta”.
