In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and in Ulysses, Joyce created Stephen’s father, Simon Dedalus, in the image of his own father. “My father had an extraordinary affection for me. […] I was very fond of him always, being a sinner myself, and even liked his faults. Hundreds of pages and scores of characters in my books came from him” (letter to Harriet Shaw Weaver, Paris, 17th January 1932).
