Between 1911-1914 Joyce wrote Giacomo Joyce, an enigmatic text composed of 50 unconnected and irregular fragments. The manuscript presents uneven gaps between the paragraphs.
The title is written in another hand on the cover. It is autobiographical, it is set in Trieste
and its lyrical fragments trace the emotional turmoil of the love of an English teacher (Joyce) for an elegant and highly seductive young student. It was eventually published by Richard Ellmann in 1968. The identity of the young lady – which lies behind the interrogative pronoun “who?”
with which the lyrical tale begins – is still unknown. Scholars have suggested the names of Joyce’s young Triestine students: Amalia Popper, Emma Cuzzi, Annie Schleimer and Bice Richetti Randegger.
